The researchers published their study inThe Journal of Sexual Medicineshowing that a combination of increasing men’s sexual desire and physical activity could potentially help improve men’s sexual function.
Men in the study reported an increase of 4.7% in sexual desire and 5.1% in erectile dysfunction, compared to just 1.1% in men who took a placebo. The research was published online April 2023.
“The increased sexual desire and erectile function in men who took Viagra (sildenafil citrate) are of significant interest because sexual function and other related conditions are frequently linked,” said study co-author Dr. Jonathan D. Dolin, M. D., assistant professor of urology at Yale University School of Medicine and head of the department of urology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. “We are interested in the men who may be at risk of developing erectile dysfunction.”
The study was led by Dolin and colleagues from the National Institutes of Health, the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, the University of Chicago School of Medicine, and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas. “Our results are consistent with earlier research in which Viagra was shown to increase sexual desire in adult men,” Dolin said.
Viagra, which is a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitor, was initially developed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men, but has since been FDA-approved for use in the general population for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Researchers used a patient questionnaire to assess sexual desire and sexual function for all men who had been taking Viagra for at least a year and had been using it for at least the previous six months. All men who reported they had not felt the effect of Viagra had also reported the following sexual dysfunction: difficulty achieving an erection or maintaining an erection, decreased erections, and reduced sexual desire.
Men who took Viagra for at least a year and who were taking sildenafil as a treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension had reported an increase in their sex drive, which is the percentage of the body that uses nitric oxide, a natural chemical produced in the lungs, to increase.

In addition to sexual dysfunction, Viagra also has potential effects on the cardiovascular system, which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, the researchers said.
“This finding highlights the importance of using Viagra in men who have erectile dysfunction,” said study co-author Dr. Steven Gernes, M. D., M. P. H., director of the NIH’s Sexual Medicine and Neuroscience Center and associate professor of urology at the University of Chicago School of Medicine. “We have to take a step to reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease and to increase the quality of life for these men who have been taking Viagra for at least a year.”
